Fire TV Stick users are advised to be vigilant when adding new applications to their devices due to a recent security concern. The popular tool known as “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, leaving room for a fraudulent copycat app that aims to deceive users into making unauthorized payments.

The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace came to light over the weekend, raising concerns among Fire TV owners. With a history spanning almost a decade, Downloader has allowed users to search for and install applications not found in official app stores, serving as a useful resource for accessing additional software and regional releases.

Despite its widespread usage, Downloader has faced a temporary suspension, as explained by its developer, Elias Saba, who also operates the Fire TV website AFTVnews. The issue stemmed from a recent update that caused Amazon to flag Downloader as a web browser, breaching the platform’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices.

Acknowledging Amazon’s restrictions on third-party browsers, Saba clarified that the problem arose from Downloader incorrectly identifying itself as a browser in the latest update. He has since rectified this by removing the browser classification in the v2.0.2 update, awaiting Amazon’s approval for the reinstatement of the app on the Appstore.

While awaiting the resolution, Saba cautioned users against a fake version of Downloader that has surfaced, aiming to deceive Fire TV owners by soliciting payments under false pretenses. To avoid falling victim to this scam, users are advised not to install the fraudulent app and report it to Amazon if encountered.

For users with the genuine Downloader already installed, Saba advised against uninstalling it, as reinstallation will not be possible until Amazon restores the app. Additionally, users are encouraged to disable Auto Offload in the device settings to prevent automatic removal of the app.

Pending approval from Amazon, Downloader may make a comeback on Fire TV devices later in the week, necessitating users to stay updated on the situation for further developments.
