Wetherspoon has revealed plans to establish a new pub at a university. The popular pub chain will operate Joe’s at the University of Birmingham in collaboration with the Guild of Students. Joe’s, named after the university’s renowned clock tower, will remain under the management of the Guild of Students.

Scheduled to open in Easter 2026 after undergoing a thorough renovation, the new venue will offer the complete Wetherspoon food and drinks selection, including special weekly deals like the Thursday Curry Club. This initiative follows Wetherspoon’s successful launch of its first university pub at Hull University in 2022.

John Hutson, the CEO of Wetherspoon, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with the Guild of Students and the prospects for Joe’s Bar. The President of the University of Birmingham Guild of Students, Antonia Listrat, highlighted the benefits for students, emphasizing the value-for-money offerings and the increased job opportunities resulting from the collaboration.

The partnership aims to enhance the student experience and support the Guild’s commercial endeavors. Wetherspoon is set to open six additional pubs by mid-January as part of its expansion plans. Recently, Wetherspoon introduced its Christmas menu featuring a turkey dinner option. The turkey feast includes various traditional elements and is priced at £13.99 with a soft drink or £15.52 with an alcoholic beverage, slightly higher than the previous year.

The Christmas menu will be available until December 31, offering customers a festive dining experience. Despite reporting higher sales and profits, Tim Martin, the head of Wetherspoon, emphasized the company’s commitment to minimizing price increases, particularly in response to tax hikes affecting the pub industry. The pub group aims to maintain affordability for its customers while navigating industry challenges.
