The continuous rise in food prices amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis is a concerning reality for many consumers. Stepping into a supermarket and observing the repeated price hikes on everyday products can be disheartening.

To combat the increasing costs, a significant number of individuals have turned to purchasing supermarket’s own basic ranges instead of opting for well-known brands. However, this strategy may not always lead to savings, as evidenced by a recent experience at Marks & Spencer, known for its upscale offerings.

For instance, the price of M&S’ Classic Mayonnaise, priced at £1.50 for a 500ml tub, is only slightly higher than Sainsbury’s Thick & Creamy 500ml at 99p and Tesco Mayonnaise at 95p for the same quantity.

However, a visit to M&S to explore their new Only… Ingredients range revealed a significant price disparity. The Olive Oil Mayonnaise, with just six ingredients, was being sold for a substantial £4.50 for a mere 250g tub, compared to the £1.50 for the Classic version.

Despite the product’s description emphasizing its premium quality and minimalistic ingredient list, the exorbitant price tag of the Olive Oil Mayonnaise raises eyebrows.

The surge in olive oil prices globally over recent years has contributed to the escalating costs of products containing this ingredient. While the trend is not entirely surprising given the market conditions, the six-fold price difference between the Olive Oil Mayonnaise and the Classic version appears excessive to consumers.

Fortunately, other items in the Only… Ingredients range seem to maintain a reasonable price point compared to their traditional counterparts.

For example, M&S offers the Only 6 Ingredients 6 Heritage Gold Pork Sausages for £4 per pack, with simpler ingredients, while the M&S Collection British 6 Farmhouse Pork Sausages are priced similarly. Similarly, the M&S Only 5 Ingredients 4 White Rolls are priced at £2 per pack, making them a cost-effective choice compared to other options.

The introduction of the M&S Only… Ingredients range, promoting simplicity and quality in food products, is commendable. However, consumers may find the pricing of certain items, like the Olive Oil Mayonnaise, to be disproportionately high within the range.

While the Olive Oil Mayonnaise stands out as a premium offering, it is essential to note that the current market conditions and production challenges contribute to the elevated prices of such products.

For further insights, M&S has been approached for comments regarding the pricing and composition of their Only… Ingredients range.
