Jewel Shuping’s decision to intentionally go blind may seem perplexing to many, but for her, it was the realization of a deep-seated desire rather than a tragic loss.
Living with Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition where individuals feel a disconnect between their perceived and actual physical state, Jewel harbored a strong belief that she should be blind, despite being visually healthy.
Her fascination with blindness began in childhood, as she felt it was her true identity. Embracing this notion as she grew older, Jewel adopted blind-related behaviors like using a cane and learning Braille, all leading up to a drastic step to achieve her desired blindness.
In 2006, Jewel found a psychologist willing to assist her in pouring drain cleaner into her eyes, causing irreparable damage. Despite the excruciating process and subsequent blindness, Jewel expressed contentment, affirming that this was her destined state.
Although her choice strained relationships with family members, Jewel stands by her decision, asserting that becoming blind was not merely a choice but a profound necessity for her. She aims to shed light on BIID, urging others grappling with the condition to seek safer paths toward self-realization.
Jewel’s cautionary tale underscores the dangers associated with extreme measures to alter one’s physical state, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional support and guidance in managing conditions like BIID.
