As many as 1.1 million individuals may not be taking advantage of the Attendance Allowance, a benefit that can provide up to £441 per month. The latest data from Policy in Practice highlights the importance of checking eligibility for additional support. This allowance is specifically designed for individuals above state pension age who require extra assistance or supervision due to a disability or illness.

If daily tasks are time-consuming or cause discomfort, you might qualify for Attendance Allowance, especially if you have needed help for at least six months. The weekly amount varies based on the level of assistance required, ranging from £73.90 to £110.40. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) disburses this benefit every four weeks, with potential payments of £295.60 or £441.60 per period.

It is crucial to inform the DWP of any changes in circumstances that could impact your Attendance Allowance. This benefit is not means-tested, tax-free, and exempt from the benefit cap. Additionally, receiving Attendance Allowance may lead to an increase in other existing benefits, although individuals already receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) are ineligible.

In Scotland, Attendance Allowance has been replaced by Pension Age Disability Payment. Claimants can submit their applications by sending the Attendance Allowance claim form to Freepost DWP Attendance Allowance or by contacting the Attendance Allowance helpline for assistance. Documentation detailing how the disability or illness affects daily life, along with supporting evidence like GP letters or care plans, is required during the application process.

Some applicants may need to undergo an assessment before receiving Attendance Allowance, except for those who are terminally ill, who are fast-tracked for approval at the higher rate.
