Newly released footage captures a killer prowling the streets before carrying out a deadly home invasion. Direece Roche, 31, forcibly entered the residence of 64-year-old Fintan McDwyer on June 30 last year, fatally stabbing him 77 times. The victim, a retired grandfather, was alone as his family was attending a wedding.

Roche confessed to police that his motive was to steal Mr. McDwyer’s dog, Sammy, which belonged to his grandmother, who was Fintan’s sister. Surveillance footage presented in court shows Roche navigating through backyards and alleys, dressed in dark attire, gloves, and a balaclava, on his way to the house in Fallowfield, Manchester. Following the murder, he fled by climbing over fences.

Mr. McDwyer’s body remained undiscovered until his son returned home two days later. During a search of the area, police found a trace of blood on a fence Roche had used to escape, which led to the breakthrough identification of Roche as the perpetrator through forensic testing.

In 2011, Roche was convicted of murdering a 23-year-old in Salford and served a 12-year sentence. He committed the murder of Mr. McDwyer approximately nine months after his release. Roche unsuccessfully claimed in court that Mr. McDwyer had sexually abused him as a child.

Roche, now 31, was recently sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. The judge dismissed Roche’s claims and emphasized Mr. McDwyer’s innocence. The court described the murder as premeditated with meticulous planning and noted Roche’s lack of remorse.

Detective Inspector Lee Shaw commended the investigative team for their diligent work in linking Roche to the crime. The CCTV footage played a crucial role in understanding the sequence of events. The police expressed their commitment to delivering justice to the victim’s family and hoped the sentencing would provide some solace and closure to them during this tragic time.
