A doctor has raised a cautionary alert regarding the use of a common medication. Omeprazole, a widely used drug in the UK functioning as a proton pump inhibitor, is commonly prescribed to address issues like acid reflux, heartburn, and stomach ulcers.

Being the foremost and frequently recommended proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole garners millions of NHS prescriptions annually. It is deemed vital for numerous patients grappling with acid-related stomach ailments.

Recent data reveals that in England alone, 73 million NHS prescriptions for all proton pump inhibitors were dispensed during 2022-23, with omeprazole ranking among the top two most prescribed medications. Given the substantial number of individuals taking or being recommended omeprazole, a medical professional has issued a cautionary message to users. Additional NHS alerts cover various concerns, including a rare infection.

Dr Ana Pérez Ballesta, a family physician with expertise in Emergency Medicine, emphasizes that using omeprazole unnecessarily can have adverse effects on health. Consuming the medication without a genuine need may impede the absorption of essential nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12.

While omeprazole is prevalent in the UK and globally, the doctor warns that its usage has expanded beyond its intended medical scope. Many individuals resort to it as a “stomach protector” against heavy meals, alcohol intake, or sporadic medication use.

However, sustained, unjustified usage can lead to side effects without proper medical oversight. Omeprazole, along with similar drugs like esomeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, and rabeprazole, falls under the category of proton pump inhibitors, reducing stomach acid levels and proving beneficial in specific conditions like reflux, ulcers, and Helicobacter pylori eradication.

Dr Ballesta underscores that using omeprazole preventively without a valid clinical rationale can be problematic. She cautions against taking it to preempt heartburn before meals or when prescribed other medications. This common practice, often referred to as “stomach protection,” lacks substantial medical basis.

Persistent, unnecessary omeprazole use may result in severe repercussions, hindering the absorption of vital nutrients and potentially leading to conditions like osteoporosis, anaemia, and digestive infections. The doctor also highlights the association between omeprazole usage and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

The risks associated with long-term omeprazole use are concerning, potentially causing vitamin and mineral deficiencies, bone fractures, and kidney problems, particularly among older adults. While observational studies suggest a link between omeprazole and long-term side effects, conclusive evidence is lacking.

Dr Ballesta reminds omeprazole users that while the drug is effective when appropriately prescribed, routine or preventive utilization without medical guidance should be avoided. Abrupt cessation of omeprazole might trigger a temporary reoccurrence of acid reflux symptoms known as “rebound acid hypersecretion,” stemming from heightened stomach acid production post-medication discontinuation.

Notably, the NHS advises against prolonged omeprazole intake without a prescription exceeding two weeks and recommends consulting a GP if symptoms worsen or persist. The NHS outlines the various forms in which omeprazole is available and underscores the importance of adhering to dosage instructions based on individual needs.

Although omeprazole can induce side effects, their occurrence varies among users. Serious adverse effects, though rare, can arise with prolonged omeprazole usage, necessitating close monitoring and medical advice to weigh benefits against risks based on individual health conditions.
