Three-year-old Teddy Nicholls, who is awaiting his third liver transplant, continues to bring joy and positivity to those around him despite his challenging medical condition. Teddy, born with neonatal haemochromatosis, has already undergone two unsuccessful liver transplants. His mother, Emma, shared that the family is hopeful that someone will offer Teddy the gift of life by registering as an organ donor with the NHS.

Despite facing numerous health struggles, Teddy remains resilient and cheerful, described by Emma as a spirited and lively child who brightens the lives of everyone he meets. Emma emphasized the crucial importance of organ donation, highlighting it as a life-saving gift that can transform the lives of many families like theirs.

Teddy, alongside his older brother Theo, had his first liver transplant at just ten weeks old, receiving a portion of a liver from a deceased donor. Emma and Greg, his parents, consider the donor as Teddy’s “superhero.” Later, Teddy underwent a second transplant, with Emma donating a portion of her liver to ensure his long-term survival. The surgery, performed at King’s College Hospital in London, involved a specialized technique to resize the liver to fit a baby’s body.

While Teddy is currently stable, there are signs of his liver deteriorating, prompting the need for a new liver. Emma stressed the importance of finding the right donor organ to ensure Teddy’s health and longevity. Despite the challenges, Emma and Greg remain resilient, continuously supporting Teddy in his fight for a healthier life.

Recent reports indicate a surge in the NHS transplant waiting list due to a decline in donors post-pandemic. This shortage coincides with an increasing demand for organs, leaving around 12,000 individuals in uncertainty over receiving life-saving transplants. The implementation of the Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Act, known as “Max and Keira’s Law,” aims to streamline the organ donation process and increase donation rates.

Emma encouraged individuals to register as organ donors and support the NHS Organ Donor Register. She emphasized the profound impact of organ donation in saving lives and urged people to consider contributing to this critical cause. Despite the challenges faced by families awaiting transplants, Emma highlighted the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones and creating lasting memories.
