A man has been given a lengthy prison sentence for trying to kill his girlfriend when she discovered he was communicating with other women. Michael Cosgrove, 46, choked his partner twice after a concert in Manchester. He left her unconscious and injured before attempting to flee by jumping out of a window in Stockport.

Despite denying the charge of attempted murder, Cosgrove was convicted at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court. The court heard that the couple had been arguing over his use of a dating app to contact other women before the incident.

During the concert on August 24, 2024, where they were in good spirits, the situation escalated upon their return home. When the victim expressed her desire to end the relationship, Cosgrove became violent, pushing and strangling her.

Despite the victim’s struggles to escape, Cosgrove continued his assault, threatening to kill them both. The violence prompted a neighbor to call the police, leading to Cosgrove’s arrest as he tried to return to the property the following morning.

Evidence presented in court included photos of the victim’s injuries and testimony highlighting the severe impact of the attack on her mental health. The victim, who has since relocated due to the trauma, expressed feelings of betrayal and humiliation during the trial.

Cosgrove, who had no prior criminal record, was found guilty of attempted murder and intentional strangulation. His defense attorney cited mental health issues as a contributing factor to his actions but acknowledged his client’s remorse.

Despite the defense’s claims of remorse, the judge noted Cosgrove’s lack of genuine regret and failure to acknowledge his role in domestic abuse. Cosgrove was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a restraining order issued against him. The court emphasized the long-lasting effects of the incident on the victim’s well-being and confidence.

Detective Constable Chris Payne from Greater Manchester Police commended the victim for her courage and cooperation, which was instrumental in securing justice against Cosgrove. The sentence aims to provide closure for the victim and ensure accountability for the harm inflicted by her abuser.
