Britons who are prescribed a common medication are being advised to steer clear of a particular beverage due to potential risks. Health experts caution that the combination of this medication and the drink could have dangerous interactions.

Sertraline is a widely-used antidepressant medication that is commonly prescribed to manage depression and various mental health issues. In England alone, a substantial number of sertraline prescriptions were dispensed in 2024, making it one of the frequently recommended drugs.

This medication belongs to a class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Its mechanism of action involves boosting the levels of serotonin in the brain, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, resulting in feelings of calmness and happiness.

Despite its benefits, sertraline carries certain precautions. The National Health Service (NHS) advises individuals taking sertraline to avoid consuming grapefruit juice. The NHS emphasizes, “Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking sertraline,” as explained by experts at Harvard Health who note that grapefruit juice can interact adversely with numerous medications, including sertraline.

The primary concern lies in a chemical compound called furanocoumarin found in grapefruit, as well as in Seville oranges and tangelos. This compound interferes with an enzyme in the intestines, specifically CYP3A4, which can hinder the absorption of certain medications. Consequently, the medication can enter the bloodstream more rapidly and at higher levels than usual, posing potential health risks.

Additionally, the NHS cautions against alcohol consumption while on sertraline treatment, as it can compromise the effectiveness of the medication. It is also important to be wary of potential interactions with other medications, herbal remedies, and supplements when taking sertraline, and individuals are advised to inform their healthcare provider about all substances they are using before starting sertraline therapy.
