Persistent heartburn symptoms should not be overlooked as they could indicate a more serious health issue, according to a GP. Dr. Dan Baumgardt, a GP based in Bristol and a lecturer at the University of Bristol, warns that ongoing heartburn or indigestion should prompt medical attention. In some cases, heartburn may be a sign of acid reflux or even cancer, as indicated by Dr. Baumgardt in The Conversation.

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia in medical terms, is characterized by discomfort, bloating, burping, nausea, and a sense of fullness. It can involve acid reflux, where stomach acid moves back up the esophagus, causing a bitter taste in the mouth.

Various factors such as coffee, alcohol, spicy or fatty foods, smoking, pregnancy, and large meals can trigger indigestion. Certain medications like antidepressants, ibuprofen, and iron tablets may also lead to indigestion symptoms. Persistent indigestion could be a red flag for upper gastrointestinal cancers, especially if accompanied by unexplained weight loss, upper abdominal pain, or cardiac chest pain.

Warning signs to watch for include jaundice, nausea, vomiting, altered bowel movements, and other concerning changes. While over-the-counter remedies may offer temporary relief, individuals experiencing severe and persistent indigestion are advised to seek medical advice rather than self-medicate. Dr. Baumgardt emphasizes the importance of consulting a GP for recurrent or severe indigestion problems, particularly if alarming symptoms are present.
