Thomas Jacob Sanford has been identified as the individual suspected of perpetrating a shooting and arson attack at a church in Michigan. The incident took place during a service at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Grand Blanc. Sanford, reported to be a former US Marine who served in Iraq, allegedly rammed a truck into the church, opened fire, and set the building on fire, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals and multiple injuries.
Law enforcement officials stated that after the attack, Sanford was engaged by police officers in a firefight outside the church, resulting in his death. The building sustained significant damage from the fire before being extinguished, with authorities anticipating finding additional victims once the site is secure.
The motive behind Sanford’s actions remains unknown, and investigators are currently searching his residence for more information. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident and called for an end to such acts of violence in the country.
The tragic event adds to a series of attacks on places of worship in the US over the past two decades. The community of Grand Blanc Township, where the church is located, has been deeply affected by this shocking incident.
