A man has been condemned to death following the discovery of his girlfriend’s body buried beneath his residence. Marissa Grimes, aged 26, was last seen alive when she went to bid farewell to her abusive partner, Valerian ‘Will’ O’Steen, 28, as she intended to leave him. However, O’Steen’s aggression escalated, leading to a tragic outcome where he brutally murdered Marissa and concealed her remains in the crawl space of their home.

Law enforcement found Marissa’s abandoned vehicle near O’Steen’s property, prompting a search that unveiled her decomposed body ten days later. The couple had a history of domestic violence, with O’Steen displaying abusive behavior towards Marissa, a mother of three children. Prosecutors argued that O’Steen had both the motive and opportunity to commit the heinous crime.

According to People Magazine, prior to her demise in February 2022, O’Steen had threatened Marissa’s life and prevented her from leaving his residence. Despite her courageous efforts to seek help by contacting her mother, O’Steen was arrested on charges of domestic violence. The situation worsened when he expressed his desire to have the GPS monitor removed, indicating a potential threat to Marissa’s safety.

On the night Marissa planned to depart for West Texas, she visited O’Steen to say goodbye but ended up in the company of a neighbor. Tragically, during this visit, O’Steen brandished a gun at Marissa, marking the last time she was seen alive. Her truck was found near O’Steen’s house, and subsequent investigations led to the grim discovery of Marissa’s body hidden beneath the residence.

Forensic evidence revealed that Marissa had suffered severe physical trauma, including multiple injuries to her head, black eyes, and broken bones. Prosecutors highlighted O’Steen as the sole individual with the motive and means to carry out the murder. Despite O’Steen’s denial of the allegations during the trial, a jury found him guilty of murder, leading to the decision to pursue the death penalty.

Following the sentencing by Judge Ryan Hill, Marissa’s father addressed O’Steen, expressing the profound impact of his actions on their family. Despite the verdict, O’Steen remained stoic, showing no visible reaction to the outcome. Domestic abuse support services are available for those in need, such as the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, offering assistance and guidance to victims of such violence.
