A specialist in weight loss has issued a caution that unidentified hormone imbalances might be hindering the weight loss efforts of many individuals in the UK, even when they are maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. Professor Franklin Joseph, from Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, highlighted the impact of conditions such as insulin resistance and cortisol spikes on the body’s ability to shed excess weight, emphasizing that simply counting calories may not resolve the issue.

Professor Joseph stated that they frequently encounter patients who are struggling to lose weight despite following recommended practices. He emphasized that hormonal imbalances, regulating factors like appetite, fat storage, and energy levels, can significantly impede weight loss progress if left unaddressed.

Insulin resistance, a common obstacle, leads to increased fat storage, especially around the abdomen, and heightened sugar cravings even with a nutritious diet. Another challenge is cortisol, the stress hormone, which when chronically elevated, can disrupt metabolism and contribute to stubborn belly fat accumulation.

Professor Joseph warned about the potential negative effects of intense workouts, like HIIT, on cortisol levels, especially when combined with existing stress or inadequate rest, which could result in fatigue and inflammation rather than weight loss. He stressed that resolving hormonal imbalances requires a deeper understanding of the body’s functioning, including issues like insulin resistance, thyroid irregularities, and cortisol imbalances.

These imbalances, often overlooked in routine check-ups, can hinder weight loss progress, increase cravings, and cause fatigue despite adherence to a healthy diet. Targeted evaluations for blood sugar, thyroid function, and stress markers can provide valuable insights into why some individuals struggle to see results.

Recognizable symptoms of hormonal imbalances may include stubborn belly fat, energy slumps in the afternoon, persistent sugar cravings despite a high-protein diet, poor sleep quality, or lingering fatigue even after rest days. Professor Joseph emphasized the importance of seeking proper assessment rather than pushing harder when faced with stalled progress on a weight loss plan.

With the growing prevalence of conditions like prediabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and stress-related hormonal issues, Professor Joseph advised against self-blame for weight loss plateaus, emphasizing the importance of recognizing when the body requires assistance rather than attributing stalled progress solely to personal effort.
