Virgin Media O2 users are being cautioned to be vigilant against a new deceptive email circulating in the UK. This email is targeting individuals affected by the recent discontinuation of O2’s 3G mobile platform, which ceased operations earlier this year.
Although the majority of O2 customers are not impacted by this transition, cybercriminals are seizing the opportunity to deceive users. Virgin Media O2 has alerted customers to remain watchful as scammers are trying to exploit the 3G shutdown by sending fake emails purporting to be from the company, claiming that a SIM card upgrade is necessary.
The fraudulent email, resembling official communications, carries the subject line “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.” Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these messages are not legitimate and should be disregarded.
Customers are advised not to click on any links or respond to the email but to promptly delete it. Any recipient of such an email is encouraged to report it by forwarding it to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.
This phishing scam is concerning as it involves criminals posing as reputable organizations to extract sensitive personal information. In some instances, scammers might dispatch a SIM card via courier, prompting recipients to activate it using a provided four-digit PIN.
The email instructs users to log in to the O2 app with a given password and includes a “Contact Us” button, potentially connecting victims directly to the fraudsters. Successful scams could result in unauthorized access to customer accounts, theft of personal data, or even identity theft, leading to severe disruptions and financial losses.
To avoid falling victim to such schemes, it is recommended to ignore suspicious emails from service providers and contact the company directly through verified channels. Seeking a second opinion from a trusted individual before taking any action can also help verify the legitimacy of such communications.
