An NHS physician has emphasized the extensive health benefits of consuming chickpeas, describing them as a cost-effective and widely available pulse. Dr. Amir Khan pointed out that chickpeas are rich in protein and fiber, which work together to slow down digestion and promote a feeling of fullness.

In a TikTok video, he explained how chickpeas can help regulate blood sugar levels due to their low glycemic index. Dr. Khan highlighted that chickpeas have a low glycemic index, indicating a gradual increase in blood sugar levels after consumption, unlike a sudden spike.

Additionally, the doctor highlighted the soluble fiber properties of chickpeas, forming a gel-like substance in the digestive system that can alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and reduce the risk of bowel cancer.

Dr. Khan also mentioned that chickpeas are a good source of magnesium and potassium, which may contribute to heart health and lower blood pressure. He emphasized the potential role of chickpeas in preventing bowel cancer.

Furthermore, he discussed the production of butyrate in the body by consuming chickpeas, a fatty acid that could reduce inflammation in the large bowel and potentially lower the risk of bowel cancer.

Concluding his advice, Dr. Khan praised chickpeas as an excellent source of iron, essential for maintaining healthy red blood cells. He shared his preferred ways of consuming chickpeas, suggesting to enjoy them as hummus, in salads, or straight from the can with chili flakes for a delightful treat.

His followers expressed appreciation for the advice, with one follower stating they would incorporate more chickpeas into their meals. Others shared their favorite ways of enjoying chickpeas, such as roasting them with seasonings or preparing chickpea-based curries and dishes.

According to NHS recommendations, most individuals should aim for at least 30g of fiber daily. Despite many people falling short of this target, just 100g of boiled chickpeas provides eight grams of fiber. Research suggests that the fiber and nutrients found in chickpeas are essential in reducing the risk of conditions like heart disease.
