Virgin Media is set to upgrade some of its broadband customers to newer and more advanced home routers at no extra cost. The company announced the rollout targeting users still using the older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices, which are less efficient compared to the newer Hub 5 featuring upgraded Wi-Fi 6 technology for faster and more reliable connections.

Eligible customers will receive email notifications in the upcoming weeks and months as the gradual upgrade process extends throughout 2026. Virgin Media highlighted that the Hub 5, equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas, ensures stronger and consistent coverage within homes. The company aims to benefit thousands of customers by the end of 2026 through these upgrades.

If qualified, Virgin Media will contact customers directly, eliminating the need for proactive actions until they receive communication. Customers can also verify their eligibility by accessing their My Virgin Media account online.

To determine the router model, users can check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device or log in to the Virgin Media Connect app for the information.

Upgrading to the Hub 5 router can enhance broadband experiences significantly, offering broader Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. The Hub 5 is designed to accommodate faster Gig1 speeds, resulting in quicker downloads and streaming. Gig1 speeds enable users to download a full HD movie in under 40 seconds, surpassing the UK average speed by over 10 times.

Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless networking technology, provides faster speeds, enhanced efficiency, and superior performance in congested environments. It can manage multiple connected devices simultaneously, offering better performance across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6 is energy-efficient, making it suitable for modern smart homes with numerous connected devices and high data requirements. While Wi-Fi 7 technology is available, Wi-Fi 6 remains ideal for the average user.
