Ryan Moore is not expected to return to racing until next year, as disclosed by trainer Aidan O’Brien on Thursday. The esteemed jockey, who is the top rider for O’Brien’s renowned Ballydoyle stable, has been sidelined since early September due to a stress fracture of the femur. O’Brien initially indicated that Moore, aged 42, would have an undetermined recovery period. Consequently, Christophe Soumillon was brought in as a high-caliber replacement.
During Moore’s absence, Soumillon has achieved notable success by securing four Group 1 victories on Ballydoyle horses, including wins in prestigious races such as the Irish Champion Stakes, Prix Marcel Boussac, Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, and the Fillies’ Mile. Additionally, Soumillon guided Minnie Hauk to a close second place in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
On the upcoming Qipco British Champion’s Day at Ascot, Soumillon, a ten-time French champion jockey, is set to ride for O’Brien in four Group 1 races. His mounts include Stay True in the Long Distance Cup, Bedtime Story in the Fillies & Mares, The Lion In Winter in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, and Delacroix in the Champion Stakes.
Despite Moore’s recent attendance at Newmarket fixtures as a spectator alongside O’Brien, it appears that Soumillon will continue in the jockey role, supported by Wayne Lordan, for the remainder of 2025, including the upcoming Breeders’ Cup in November. O’Brien expressed confidence in Soumillon, stating that Moore is progressing well and hinted at a potential return next year to ensure long-term recovery from his injury.
During a Champions Day media conference, O’Brien mentioned, “Christophe has been a valuable asset to us for years, and Ryan appears to be on track for his comeback.” When asked about Moore’s return timeline, O’Brien indicated, “It is likely to be in the next year. Ryan is prioritizing long-term recovery over a quick return.”
