The upcoming Rugby League Ashes tournament will be showcased on the BBC after a hiatus of more than two decades. Originating in 1908, the series historically featured Great Britain competing against Australia in 39 matches until its abrupt end in 2003. Now, the event is making a comeback with a significant alteration – England will replace Great Britain as the challengers to Australia.
England, led by head coach Shaun Wane, will step into the role previously held by their Great British predecessors. The revived series will see matches held at three different venues in England, starting with Wembley Stadium on October 25, followed by games at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and AMT Headingley Stadium on November 1 and 8, respectively.
All three games will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with Mark Chapman hosting the coverage alongside a panel of pundits including Sam Burgess, Kev Brown, Jon Wilkin, Jamie Peacock, Jodie Cunningham, and Robbie Hunter-Paul. Commentary will be provided by Jonathan ‘Jiffy’ Davies and Matt Newsum, with additional insights from James Graham, John Kear, and Brian Noble, while Tanya Arnold and Damian Johnson will report from the sidelines.
Alex Kay-Jelski, the Director of BBC Sport, emphasized the significance of reviving this iconic rivalry, aiming to engage fans with the sport’s history and intensity. Rhodri Jones, the Managing Director of RL Commercial, highlighted the historic return of the Rugby League Ashes after a 22-year absence and expressed delight in the partnership with BBC for the live coverage.
Looking ahead to the matches, the stage is set for a thrilling display of sporting excellence as England faces off against the 2025 Kangaroos in London, Liverpool, and Leeds this autumn.
