Ricky Hatton was reportedly in good spirits during a visit from his family shortly before his passing, as shared at a Coroner’s Court session. The preliminary cause of death was disclosed as ‘hanging’ by Alison Mutch during the inquest held at South Manchester’s Coroner’s Court in Stockport, with a full inquest scheduled for March 20, 2026.
Paul Speak, Hatton’s manager and close friend, discovered Hatton unresponsive at his residence in Gee Cross, Hyde, on September 14. This incident occurred just before they were supposed to depart for Dubai from Manchester Airport.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed Hatton’s death, stating no suspicious circumstances were suspected, and the case was referred to the coroner for further investigation.
According to the hearing details, Hatton was last seen looking well by his family two days before he was found unresponsive. Although he had returned home, he failed to attend a scheduled event the following day, though specifics about the event were not disclosed in court.
Speak recounted finding Hatton unresponsive at home, sharing his initial shock and distress at the scene, and his belief that Hatton did not intend harm. The funeral for Hatton took place at Manchester Cathedral, with thousands paying respects along the procession route that included significant locations in Hatton’s life.
Numerous celebrities and close friends attended the service, where eulogies were delivered, including a tribute from Adam Smith of Sky Sports, describing Hatton as both a boxing icon and a hero of the working class. The cortege also made stops at symbolic locations, such as the Etihad Stadium, before proceeding to a private committal attended by family members.
