Many individuals may overlook their pension funds, especially if they have changed jobs frequently. Research from the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) in 2024 suggests that around £31.1 billion is currently unclaimed or lost in pension pots.

John Ferguson, a 32-year-old security worker residing in Edinburgh, successfully located £10,000 in missing pension funds using the Penny app. Through this app, he identified seven pension pots, two of which he was unaware of previously. Ferguson suspects there may be more undiscovered pensions awaiting him.

The Penny app utilizes National Insurance numbers and any available information about past employment or pension providers to track down lost pension funds. Users can also consolidate multiple pensions into a single account using the app, but it is essential to consider factors such as transfer fees, potential loss of benefits, and charges associated with the new provider.

For individuals seeking lost pensions, the government offers the Pension Tracing Service, a free tool that helps locate forgotten pension accounts by providing previous employment details. While this service provides contact information for pension providers, individuals must contact the administrators to determine the invested amounts.

Moreover, a new pensions dashboard tool is set to launch this year, enabling individuals to access all their pension information in one place. By October 31, 2026, approximately 3,000 providers and schemes will be integrated into the dashboard, offering a comprehensive view of retirement funds.
